Changes!

Posted 09 May, 2015 05:47 PM by Ron

The 2015-2016 Quiz year will cover Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon (don't worry--it's not as long as it sounds).  We will continue to charge $3 per quizzer for district quizzes.  This is to help offset the costs of ribbons, trophies and other event costs.

Changes are coming to our website!!  I re-created the forums and encourage coaches/students to check them out.  We're hoping this will generate some community discussion as we enter into the new quiz year!

I have created a shutterfly share account for our pictures, so the pictures link is working again.  If you take pictures of your local team, and would like to share those, let me know and I can add you as a contributor to that page. I just grabbed a few pictures from the year to get started (and added ONE picture from Q into the ACTS folder--going forward hopefully we will do better at keeping this current).

Helpful links and open tournaments have also been updated.

The schedule for next year has been added. We have not yet scheduled churches.  We do prioritize based on overall support of the program.  We like for the host church to provide lunch, and we like for everyone to participate in that lunch.  It keeps our day running smoothly and it promotes and supports other local teams.  We realize not everyone loves pizza and hot dogs the way we do, but we still ask that you do your best to support the local church providing lunch. The church also must be large enough to host.  If your church is NOT large enough, you are able to partner with other area churches (example: Danville West side isn't big enough, so Marcia coordinates the use of Southside, and still provides the lunch).  One other thing: we do consider geographic locations and all the quizzes can't be in Waukegan or Danville.  If you have questions or would like to host, please contact us and we can discuss the details to see if you're eligible.

We are hoping to get several new churches involved this year!  We hope you'll help us get the word out, talking to your friends, pastors and neighboring churches!  We'd love to come visit and help set something up!

March FUN Quiz!

Posted 01 Mar, 2015 05:01 PM by Ron

We have confirmed that Joliet 1st can host us for a review/fun quiz on March 14th (in place of the indy quiz). We will start at 9:30 with registration, and end at 4. We will be ordering pizza, so please bring $ for lunch. I have added it as an event to the ccdquiz.org page. Please register your quizzers so we can get an idea of who is coming by MARCH 12th at NOON. Thanks!!

Finals info is below if you haven't seen that yet.

Finals info

Posted 23 Feb, 2015 09:46 AM by Ron

The numbers are up! and you can see those on the Statistics tab. They do not have the lowest score dropped, but you can get a pretty good sense of where you stand for the year. If anyone wants a spreadsheet with the low score dropped, let me know.

The deadline to register for Finals is Mar 13, with the cost being $5 per quizzer. We are pretty flexible about this during the year, but we need registrations in early so that we can ensure a quality bracket. Registration will begin on Mar 27, at 6:30pm, and quizzing will continue on Mar 28. The tournament will consist of a complete round robin preliminary, followed by a modified double elimination tournament. All teams will enter the tournament, with seeding based on win-loss record, then head-to-head competition, and finally total points. The top 6 teams will receive awards.
Coaches are asked to verify scores and report any discrepancies. Scores will be accepted as it, otherwise.

 Traveling Trophy

There has been a lot of good competition this year for the traveling trophy! And it looks like Finals will be the quiz that determines who takes home the traveling trophy this year. Here are the points, so far:
Waukegan      10                    Hoopeston       9                     Kankakee 1st    7

As a reminder, traveling trophy points at Finals are the same as during the year- 1st place is 3 pts., 2nd place is 2 pts., and 3rd place is 1 pt. If, after finals, there is a tie in traveling trophy points, placement at finals will be used as the tie breaker, so the traveling trophy could end up with any of these 3 teams!

 Individual Placement

The top 20 quizzers will receive awards for their work on the day. These awards are independent of the ‘Top 16’ awards, which are described below.

 Top 16 and Top Quizzer

An average of the quizzers’ scores from the year will be taken to determine who qualifies for Top 16. That average is determined by doubling the quizzer’s score from finals, and adding the 4 best scores from the rest of the year. Quizzers must be present and participate in District Finals to be eligible. The quizzers with the 16 highest averages are the Top 16, and will receive special recognition.

The quizzer with the highest average for the year will be recognized as Top Quizzer, and will receive a $500 scholarship to Olivet Nazarene University.

A quiz-off will be conducted among these 16 quizzers to determine who will go on to represent CCD at Celebrate Life. If less than 4 of the Top 16 quizzers are either ineligible or unwilling to participate, the next quizzers in order of average will be asked to participate in the quiz-off.  In the event that 4 or more of the Top 16 quizzers are either ineligible or unwilling to participate, a top 12 style quiz will be conducted to determine placements on the A and B teams.

On a personal note, I want to encourage all of you to finish strong! The averages for the year are very close, and that means that making the Top 16 is not out of anyone’s grasp. A solid showing (it doesn’t even have to be exceptional-just solid) at finals could get you in.
I know that the end of Acts has a lot of information, but this book is pivotal for us as followers of Jesus, because it gives us concrete, real life examples of following Jesus. It shows us what rubber-meets-the-road Christianity should look like.
Paul encourages Timothy in 2 Timothy to stay focused and to endure, and this is what the author of Hebrews, in chapter 12, says to us:
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.  Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
Let’s dig deep and give our all for God’s glory!

A fun community activity

Posted 22 Feb, 2015 08:14 PM by Ron

Hey everyone!

The indianapolis tournament was cancelled and I know at least a few teams planned to go.  I've been talking with a few coaches about just doing a fun practice-like quiz on the 14th to help us prepare for finals.  We would start a bit later-like 9:30 maybe and then go out for lunch around 12:30 followed maybe by games or a group activity.  Anyone could come hang out, review for finals and enjoy our community.  There would be no cost to quiz, but probably $10 to eat and $10 for an activity depending on what we find (if a host church let us come back and people wanted to help organize games then no activity cost) Let me know if you're interested so we can plan!
